Introductory Course

In order to maintain a high level of training for our existing members, we only allow new members to join our dojo three times a year during a formal Introductory Course.

The purpose of this course is to teach the most basic techniques and concepts of Daito-ryu to beginners. This course is offered three times throughout the year and contains four highly structured weekly classes that focus only on the basics. At the completion of the course, the instructor will discuss with each prospective student if joining the dojo as a full member is appropriate.

  • Previous experience in martial arts is not necessary.
  • Enrollment is limited.

Before joining us for a course, we request that you:

This course offers beginners an introduction to the basic movements, strategy, and principles of Daito-ryu as practiced by Takumakai. It consists of four highly structured lessons conducted over one month. The first lesson is free and open to the public. It is our intent to provide interested students with an opportunity to explore Daito-ryu and get to know us and our dojo. Previous experience is not necessary.

Topics covered will include:
1. Taisabaki (basic body movement)
2. Ukemi (rolling)
3. Fundamental aiki waza and its application (internal energy exercises)
4. Basic techniques from the hiden mokuroku ikkajo (first level of techniques)

At the end of the first lesson, attendees will decide if they wish to complete the enrollment process and continue training. Once fully enrolled, participants must attend three more lessons and may join us for Monday, Saturday, and Wednesday regular classes.

Our introductory course is currently scheduled for June 4th through July 2nd.

Please note that class size is limited by the total membership of the dojo and class dates are subject to change, based on instructor availability.
